   Zeleni Silvanec

This is the Silvaner widely cultivated in Germany, but it is much less popular in Slovenia. Silvanec is not particularly choosy as far as types of soil are concerned, generally quite reliable, and with a high yield per acre; however, the yields are better in rich soils although intensive fertilization (in interaction with the soil's proper minerals) can affect the taste of the wine. The grape is quite sensitive to frost and overabundant rain during its ripening stage.

The wine is of a light greenish-yellow colour, mild and harmonious, slightly soft, with a neutral bouquet and slight acidity - not exactly what one would consider a memorable wine, but then, some wine lovers do not favour the strong bouquets of, for example, Traminec or Renski Rizling. In good years, the wine is mellow and pleasantly fruity. In unfavourable years, the acids tend to be rough and the wine has an unpleasant earthy taste, particularly if grown on heavy soils.

Successful cultivation of Zeleni Silvanec is limited to the Podravje region, particularly the Prekmurje and Maribor areas. It can achieve good quality in other Podravje areas, but only in climatically ideal years.

Zeleni Silvanec should be served at 10 - 12 °C (50 - 53.6 °F); its subtle taste and gentle bouquet makes it appropriate only for dishes with equally subtle tastes: poached fish, veal roast, subtle mushroom dishes, and the like.
