Beli Pinot (White Pinot, Pinot Blanc) originates in Burgundy and seems to be a descendant of the Grey Pinot, a further discoloration. The Beli Pinot must is intensely sweet and low in acids. In good years, late harvests contain up to 24% of sugars; in bad years, the acids can be quite rough, although never as rough as in (poor vintage) La{ki Rizling or [ipon. The wine is rich in alcohol, low in acids, with a fine unobtrusive bouquet and a very smooth taste. In good years, this is a very distinguished wine which ages well - it is also well suited for the production of sparkling wines.
Even young Beli Pinot gives the smooth impression of an aged wine. The colour of the young wine is straw-yellow with a greenish reflection; with aging, Beli Pinot acquires a rich golden hue. The mature wine is harmonious with its extract, the bouquet is gentle and broad with subdued reminiscences of various fruits and blossoms. Beli Pinot tastes particularly velvety.
Although usually bottled only as varietal wine, Beli Pinot is an ideal companion for La{ki Rizling: in bad years, the former tends to be to low in acids and the latter to rich so blending will produce an excellent wine.
Beli Pinot has become well established in the Brda and Vipava Valley areas of the Primorje region - this is one of the few wines that is sometimes produced in a semi-dry variety in Primorje. The Beli Pinot of Primorje has a distinct fruity flavour.
Slovene White Pinots from Podravje tend to be more aromatic than those from Primorje - rich, fragrant, and never dry; the best come from the Maribor, Prekmurje, and Ljutomer-Ormo` areas.
Beli Pinot should be served at 10 °C (50 °F) as an aperitif, or with lean meat, pasta, fish, or rice dishes.
