Teranton is a variety of Kraski Teran, but a variety with special distinction. Winegrowers discovered that some vintages of Kraski Teran did age well and retained their special characteristics for decades. Once the essentials were identified, Teranton was the product.
Only the ripest, choicest Refosk grapes grown in the mineral-rich karst soils are chosen for this wine, and very few vintages are suitable - in fact, only two or three per decade. The recipe from must to wine is something of a secret.
The production of Teranton includes protracted maceration (up to two years), the wine is cask-aged for three to six years, and the bottled wine should be aged a further two to four years. This is an incredibly smooth wine with all the qualities of Kraski Teran but with all the maturity of an aged wine. Teranton's colour is slightly off ruby red, suggesting a bit of pelure d'ognion; the wine is velvety, noble, and warm, with just a hint of the Teran's "wild" character.
Like Kraski Teran, Teranton is produced only in the Kras area of Primorje.
Teranton should be served at 16 - 18 °C (60.8 - 64.4 °F) - dishes that go well with Kraski Teran will also fit Teranton; it is also perfect with game and roast beef.
