The soil in the wineyards around the port of Izola is somewhat different than in the rest of Koper area: here Eocene limestone is predominant with admixtures of calcium carbonate and silica. The specific form of Koper area wineyards includes latniki, special trellises that support the wines and provide the necessary rigididy during spells of the burja, the cold and dry strong wind from the northeast.
